A1: The PTFE (Teflon) stopcock is generally preferred because it is self-lubricating, meaning it won’t freeze or get stuck, and it doesn’t require messy stopcock grease that could contaminate your sample. However, a glass stopcock is sometimes preferred for highly specialized organic solvents where researchers want absolutely 100% glass contact with the fluid.
Q2: How do I safely vent the funnel during extraction?
A2: When you shake immiscible liquids (like water and ether), volatile gases build up immense pressure inside the flask. You must hold the stopper firmly, invert the funnel so the stem points up and away from you, and frequently open the stopcock to vent the trapped gas safely into a fume hood.
Q3: Can this borosilicate glass handle hot liquids?
A3: Yes. Borosilicate 3.3 glass has excellent thermal shock resistance. However, separatory funnels are primarily designed for room-temperature liquid extractions. You should never heat a separatory funnel directly on a hot plate or bunsen burner.
Q4: How do I clean the stopcock valve properly?
A4: After every use, you should completely disassemble the stopcock piston from the glass stem. Wash it thoroughly with a suitable solvent or soapy water, and ensure no chemical residue dries inside the bore hole, which could cause cross-contamination in your next experiment.
