Sample Prep
Collect and reduce the bulk sample to a representative test portion.
Weigh
Record the mass of the test portion before and after each cut.
Pre-dry (optional)
If the sample is damp, dry it in the forced-air oven so particles do not clump.
Sieve
Stack the sieves in mesh order and shake to separate by size.
Analyse
Weigh each fraction and compute the gradation curve.
Before you specify the set
Is one sieve enough?
For a single cut — checking whether material passes or is retained on one mesh — yes. A graded breakdown needs three or more sieves, which is the Standard kit.
